Protecting children from abuse at home

A  mother with her four children jumped to the Karnali river in the month of March 2021. The news comes to cover the mainstream media of Nepal (read the news) . She has been reported to be a victim of domestic violence. This incidence once again submerged the culturally integrated norms of violence in families of Nepal. Domestic violence is one of the strongest drivers of child separation in Nepal. When we work towards keeping families together, it is apparent to keep families safe for children. 

The Children protection network, Denmark conducted its second seminar of seven series seminars and discussed the 2019 UN Resolution ‘Promotion and protection of the rights of children with its specific focus on prevention of family separation as well as the combatting of all forms of violence against children.  The links between domestic violence and child abuse, neglect and abandonment were discussed as a  global phenomenon. Domestic violence is a significant factor related to children are losing parental care in different parts of the world including Nepal. The causes of violence are multi-faceted and stem from various interlinking individual and situational factors ingrain in cultural and social norms and traditions.  Hence the speakers and participants shared different cultures' approaches to these issues from different parts of the world.

This seminar was highly relevant for any organization working with a rights-based approach to protect children from, and putting an end to, violence within families and communities both on a national and global level. Among the many side effects of the Covid-19 pandemic emerging data and reports, have shown that domestic violence has particularly intensified, thus increasing the need for exploring preventative strategies and taking even more urgent action for the organization and people who are working towards keeping children with families.
