Best Practice :Alternative Care - suitability principle in action in Asha Nepal

Asha Nepal

A study of Dr. Crissie Gale and Dr. Chandrika Kthatiwada in 2016 in an arrangement of alternative care in Nepal presented some concerning findings of the arrangement of alternative care of Nepalese children in parental separation. There has been very little being done to prevent child separating from their families and very few children are assisted to live in family-based care as alternative care facilities. Though the law states that placement in alternative care should be a temporary measure, very few children are reunified with their families or family-based care. The lack of regulation from the government to the different child care homes or child institutional facilities possess questions in the best interest of the child. The situation from 2016 to today has not been changed significantly in terms of regulated and effective application of suitable alternative care to the children when they separate from parents and families.

The same study presented the valuable work of the NGOs as the light at the end of the tunnel. Among some committed NGOs, Asha Nepal is one that has been working with girl children and applying family-based home care as suitable alternative care to those girlchildren who can't be reunified or returned to family and community. The 5-6 children home with home parents have been practiced by Asha Nepal as the organization learn to deal with the Nepal's context and condition. Here are their best practice process

  • Referral from other organization
  • Assessment in organization
  • Assessment of mother and family
  • Assessment of living place of family
  • Intake
  • Residential service
  • Preparation for reintegration
  • Reintegration
